Our Gr 8 students have been challenged to take on a social project this year, with an emphasis on giving back to our community. The school received this wonderful story from a parent helping a group follow through with their commitment.
I just wanted to let you know that a group of your grade 8 boys spent two days this past weekend working very hard at ‘Making a Difference!’ 5 boys helped to plant 266 trees along Eden Rd.
Early in the fall my son had asked if I thought that planting some trees would be a good idea for their ‘Making a Difference’ project. I jumped at the opportunity since I already had planned to replace many of the dying roadside trees, but couldn’t do it by myself! What started as a group of grade 8 boys turned into a larger group effort on Monday, with other neighbours and family joining in the ‘fun’ on a lovely day. We had a convoy of people, materials and equipment and had the holes dug, trees positioned, fertilized, watered and compost and mulch in place with the hopes of survival in the long term!
I’ve heard the saying that “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago” and with any luck, when the boys travel Eden Rd. 20 years from now, they will be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Thank you for a great project idea that has certainly ‘made a difference’ to the friends and neighbours along Eden Rd.
Many thanks to the parent for sharing this story and photos with us. Our intermediate students give us many reasons to be proud.
