Weekly Update October 30

Have a Safe and Spooktacular Halloween!

To make sure all our trick-or-treaters have a fun, safe, and memorable evening, here are a few simple safety tips for families to keep in mind:

  • Light Up the Night: Equip kids with flashlights or glow sticks, and add reflective tape to dark costumes or trick-or-treat bags so drivers can see them easily.
  • Choose Safe Costumes: Ensure costumes are flame-retardant and hemmed short enough to prevent tripping. Opt for face paint or non-toxic makeup instead of masks that can block sight.
  • Stick Together: Younger children should always trick-or-treat with an adult. Older students going with friends should agree on a set route, stay in familiar neighborhoods, and set a firm curfew.
  • Use Sidewalks & Crosswalks: Walk on sidewalks whenever available, cross streets at corners or marked crosswalks, and remind kids to put away cell phones while walking.
  • Inspect Treats First: Remind children not to eat any candy until an adult has checked it at home. Throw away any unwrapped or suspicious items, and double-check labels if your child has food allergies.

Progress Reports

Progress Reports & Parent-Teacher Conferences

Elementary Progress Report Cards will be sent home with students on Friday, November 13.

Progress reports provide an early check-in on your child’s learning skills, work habits, and general academic progress. Instead of letter grades or percentages, progress reports indicate whether your child is Progressing Very Well, Progressing Well, or Progressing With Difficulty toward achieving the curriculum expectations.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Thursday, November 19 from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

Again this year, we will be using an online booking system to schedule interview times with your child’s teacher. Details and instructions on how to access the portal and select your time slot will be sent out next week.

We encourage all families to review the progress report together with their child to celebrate successes and discuss goals for the term ahead!

Fall Back! Daylight Saving Time Ends Soon

Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 1! While gaining an extra hour of sleep sounds like a treat, shift changes can sometimes mess with our internal body clocks—especially for younger kids.

Here are a few quick tips to help your child adjust smoothly to the time change:

  • Shift Bedtimes Gradually: In the days leading up to Sunday, try moving bedtime and dinner back by 10 to 15 minutes each night to help your child adapt gently.
  • Stick to the Routine: Keep bedtime rituals (reading, brushing teeth, dimming lights) consistent. Familiar routines cue the brain that it’s time to rest, regardless of what the clock says.
  • Soak Up Morning Sunlight: Exposing kids to daylight early in the morning helps reset their natural circadian rhythm and boosts daytime energy.
  • Limit Evening Screen Time: Turn off tablets, TVs, and phones at least an hour before bed, as screen light can suppress melatonin and make falling asleep harder.
  • Be Patient: It usually takes a few days to a week for sleep schedules to fully normalize. Expect a little extra fatigue or restlessness as everyone adjusts!

Board Survey

This is a friendly reminder that the Fall 2026 Parent/Guardian Survey closes today.

The responses from this initiative will help guide the decisions and direction of the Board, as well as help better understand the needs of students and their families.

Visit Engage with TLDSB to complete the survey.

Mariposa Pumpkin Patch

A huge thank you to the parent council and all involved in helping make our kindergarten and intermediate/senior learning buddy pumpkin patch a success.

The morning was filled with joy, laughter, and learning. A special shout-out to our older students, who stepped up as fantastic role models and responsibly led their little buddies through all the fall centers. Way to go, Mariposa Monarchs!

St. John Ambulance Safety Courses for Youth!
